SWIMMING INFORMATION

What to Bring:
  • swim cap-can be purchased from school store during lunch, a sporting goods store, or in PE.
    • PE office sells for the school store since school store is only open during lunch.
    • $2 for latex cap; $4 for silicone
    • We do not recommend one over the other.  It’s a personal preference.
  • swimming suit - 2 piece or 1 piece
  • large towel for drying off (beach towel or bath towel)
  • small hand towel for standing on
  • goggles (not a mask) available for purchase in PE $4 clear, $6 colored
  • bag to transport items (grocery bags work great)
  • optional items = detangler, brush, other hygiene items, ear plugs
  • If you wear your suit to school (not recommended), don’t forget your undergarments!!
  • SUITS AND TOWELS MUST BE TAKEN HOME DAILY TO PREVENT MOLD & MILDEW.            (caps & goggles can stay in the locker)
  • stud earrings are allowed in the pool (at your own risk)
  • PE department has limited number of caps for borrowing for emergencies only (ripped cap, etc)
What NOT to bring:
  • hair dryers, straighteners, curling irons, etc. (we have dryers on the wall)
  • masks and nose plugs (allowed only on free days)
What to Expect:
  • longer time to dress out (10 minutes before and after class)
  • rinse off before entering pool area to remove lotions, etc.
  • allowed to rinse off after swimming
  • must dry off completely in blue room (dry room) before returning to locker room
What if I Miss?
  • PE teachers will have dates to sign up for make ups which are from 7-7:30am before school or swimming laps on a free day instead of playing.
  • If you are on your period, you must bring a note for the days you will need to be excused (stating that you are on your period).  You will take off shoes and socks and sit on the benches in pool area to listen to the lesson.  If you wear tampons, you are allowed to swim.  
  • If you have a doctor’s note, you will be excused from PE.  You will be given a written assignment to complete in the library for credit in the swimming unit.  
Tips:
  • With a friend to help, use your towel as a makeshift dressing room.
  • NO CHANGING IN THE BATHROOM STALLS!

Free Days:
  • 2 per unit

  • Deep Water Test
    • 1 length freestyle with rhythmic breathing, 2 min treading
    • The test is optional, but only girls who pass the test are allowed anywhere in the pool.  
    • If you don’t take the test or pass the test, you must remain in the shallow water.
  • Shallow End
    • toys, noodles, tubes, beach balls, fins….
  • Deep End
    • dive tramps, starting blocks, fins
